Percussion Workshops
Musical Director Seán Hooper.
Seán is a professional percussionist who moved to Cornwall in 1991 to become a full time percussion teacher with Cornwall Music Service. Part of this job includes forming and running ensembles, and the first ensemble Seán formed was a percussion ensemble called “White Noise”.
This became a pure Samba group after a couple of years, and Seán added to his technical skills and understanding of authentic Samba rhythms at the annual Brighton Encontro and through workshops given by luminaries such as Fred Turuka, Anthony Watt, Ravin Jayasura and Simon Preston.
The success of White Noise led to a demand from secondary and primary schools for their own Samba groups and through his work for Cornwall Music Service Seán now runs a total of ten Samba groups specifically for young people [And counting!].
Truro School of Samba was started as a way to encourage community involvement for all ages and skill levels, with the dancers adding another level of enjoyment and authenticity to our performances.
Sean’s commitment to Samba and to the involvement of the community in the performing arts has led to Truro School of Samba performing at nearly all the major Cornish events. Our presence at these events has brought a new energy and excitement to Carnivals and public celebrations in Cornwall.
